Are you Balancing Spiritual & Educational Focus for Your Children?

I’m thoroughly convinced that the greatest battle a teen faces in Middle School and High School is remembering or discovering their value. How can they fight for the value of their body, the value of their mind, and the value of their spirit? It’s a war that rages through bullying, fighting, understanding identity and reckless sexual exploits.

Parents fight to prep them for life with a lopsided educational focus while reducing the necessity of spiritual strengthening to a quick prayer of anxiety when grades start to drop or a negative conversation is overheared. Spiritual strength must be infused into young people. School is their dominant demonic battleground yet we toss them there with no battle gear or prep.

Consider the math of a teen’s life:

Approximate hours in school = 40 hrs per week

Approximate hours in activities = 10 hrs per week

Approximate hours at first job = 15 hrs per week

Approximate hours watching TV = 8 hrs per week

Approximate hours in church = 3 hrs per week

Are you training your children and teens to have an intimate relationship with the Lord? Do you have an intimate relationship with the Lord? Are your children encouraged to know the Lord in his mighty power? Do the know how to call out to God according to the scripture? How do you impress the commandments of God onto your children as a lasting impression?

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 gives 4 ways:

  1. When you are sitting around at home

  2. When you are spending time throughout the day

  3. When you’re going to bed and closing out the day

  4. When they get up in the morning to start their day

Bind the word on their heart – but it starts with you.

Whatever is bound on you will be bound on them.

The word of God tells your child who they are and what they are worth. If they don’t go to the Creator, then they will only know someone else’s opinion of who they are.

Ephesians 1:11a MSG

It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for.

Parents, as a former teacher, I urge you to realize that the spiritual darkness in the schools must be real to you. You have to wake up to where your children are going each day. Please don’t just cover your children, but pour into your children. The prayers must go over them, but you also must fill them with the Word of God to so they can be spiritually aware and equipped.

Let this be a time of recommitment to being a radical parent. Godly children are peculiar in the world’s eyes, but they are mighty in God. Make sure they are not just growing in educational ranking, but in spiritual discipline. If you don’t teach them, they won’t be ready.

1 Peter 2:9 NIV

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,

God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him

who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

There is much more work to do this school year

beyond studying and practicing.

Turn the TV off and get to work!

The Word to the wise is sufficient.
